Vinyasa

Sanskrit defines vinyasa as “to place in a special way”, meaning it links breath and movement with the intention to help balance mind, body, and spirit. This type of continuous flow presents multiple opportunities for growth whether it is your first time on the mat or one thousandth. Modifications are given to make vinyasa accessible to all levels of experience.

Restorative

Restorative yoga offers our bodies relaxation. With a heavy use of props, such as blocks or bolsters, this passive movement focuses on slowing the body down offering healing. Some poses may present an overall benefit while others target specific areas. Restorative yoga is a great option after a physically or mentally active day.

Yin

While we feel the heat of Yang in active vinyasa, Yin gives us the opportunity to practice stillness. Similar to restorative, Yin yoga offers the use of props. The difference is in Yin is a series of poses that are held for at least 3-5 minutes. These poses are deep stretches that apply gentle stress to muscles, ligaments, and tissues that are not typically thought of. Finding a neutral position after each intense pose will also allow you to feel a sensation, or energy, move through the body. It is common in certain poses that some wounds in need of emotional healing will resurface bringing a wide range of emotions that can be experienced.

Myofascial Release (MFR)

Myofascial release refers to the technique of applying gentle pressure on 'trigger points' to release tension in the connective tissues or fascia that bind and support our muscles, organs, bones, joints, nerve fibers, and other structures of our body. Using blocks and yoga balls, MFR can be integrated into your yoga practice and is a great tool that can be used off the mat.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation also known as “yogic sleep” or “effortless relaxation”. During this practice of drawing our attention inward, our bodies can settle into a state of homeostasis. Our balanced breath creates a space where both the subconscious and conscious meet. This therapeutic practice offers deep healing, restoration, and connection with our deepest, all-knowing, all-loving selves. We, then, awake in a state of harmonious being.

Meditation

In yoga, meditation makes up the seventh limb and is referred to as “dhyana”. We define this as a state of pure consciousness. When diving into this practice, we may choose to focus on a mantra or even more simply, nothing at all. Bringing breath awareness in the present moment to quiet the mind presents us with a plethora of benefits. We can learn to increase our creativity through guided visualizations, improve our sleep quality, gather clarity and new perspective, and even lower our blood pressure.

Pranayama

“Prana” is BREATH. Breath is energy that vitalizes yoga. “Ayama” means to control. Pranayama is the practice of controlling the breath and consists of three parts. Inhalation, exhalation, and retention, all of which are regulated with various durations of time. Many different forms of breath can enhance our flow, from activating and warming the body, to releasing what no longer serves us. The most simple, yet important, pranayama allows us to quiet our minds and brings us back to our presence. Pranayama has also been more widely known as “breathwork”, and offers a therapeutic value in the deep healing of wounds, whether it be ancestral or recent. It precedes meditation as the sixth limb of yoga as the practice of dhyana cannot be achieved without it.

Mantra through Music

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali equate mantra to “sound vibrations” or “divine words”. Mantra eases the practice of meditation for beginners because it offers vocal activation and a focal point. Chanting sacred syllables along with conscious breathing can be used as a manifestation tool to ring in clarity, dreams, connection, desires, and even activate blocked chakras. As a musician, Kimberly can incorporate music into the beginning or end of your personalized flow, teaching Sanskrit mantras through guitar, ukulele, and singing.
